Better than nothing? December 19, 2008 As an on-the-road guide, this guide came up short. It was full of the sort of information I didn't need, and never seemed to quite deliver on the information I was seeking. It's ostensibly a guidebook about Puerto Vallarta, but most of the information was about trips to take beyond the city. That could be the nature of the city itself (most people use it as a jumping-off point for jungle, snorkeling, sailing, etc. day trips), but after looking through the guide repeatedly in an effort to figure out what sort of things we could do after we were done strolling the highly touted but numbingly touristy Isla Cuale and walking up and down the Malecon day after day, I wasn't able to find much in this guide.
I got this guide because we were also headed up the Riviera Nayarit to go to Sayulita. The restaurant recommendations were pretty weak and missed some of the best spots in town.
So was it worth its packing weight? Maybe for someone who plans to find accommodations on-the-fly, and who doesn't want to do any research before going. But in the end, not for me.
