Product Description
Completely updated, this insider's guide veers off the tourist trail for intrepid travelers to experience the local color, intrigue and charm of the Riviera Maya. For travelers in the know, Playa del Carmen is the little gem with all the beauty of white sand beaches that has drawn crowds from around the world to Cancun, with none of the high-rise overdevelopment. Playa remains a wonderful, sleepy town on a human scale, yet its discovery has resulted in a wide range of lodging and dining options. For families and adventurous travelers alike, there's something for everyone in this Mexican Riviera, known as the “Riviera Maya.” You can explore the fascinating Mayan ruins on the beach at Tulum, shop and have a fabulous lunch on the pedestrian area in Playa, stay in a full-service resort along Playacar, and go for some of the best fishing in the world near the famous Sian Ka'an biosphere in Punta Allen. The Riviera Maya is one of the true travel hot spots in the world today. This is the first guidebook to focus on Playa del Carmen. As in all the Great Destinations series guides, you'll find important contact information, including websites, transportation details, a calendar of events, an abundance of photos and maps, and essential local information. 5 out of 5 stars Take this book on your next trip to Riviera Maya!   July 18, 2006

Mr. Hinsdale has penned an excellent travel guide for the Riviera Maya (The Carribean coast line of Mexico), the heart and soul of which is Playa Del Carmen, at least for those looking for something more laid back than the high rises and high octane lifestyle of Cancun. In spite of the rapid growth along this coastline, Playa has managed to retain much of its sleepy, beach bum charm with a very international flavor. The guide is packed full of usefull information for the travler along with an extensive listing of dining and lodging options to fit most every budget. Included are plenty of pictures that give an idea of what to expect when you get there. The guide also gives the traveler plenty of ideas for adventure and fun, from touring ancient ruin sites to cenote diving with good descriptions of each of these adventures (you'll run out of money or time before you run out of things to do!). All the needed contact information is included. The guide books side boxes also make for fun reading. These are gray colored boxes located on almost every page that are full of interesting information and or fascinating facts about the area. I had fun just paging through the book and reading these side bars. If I had to find one fault in the book is that its coverage of the ruins sites, while adequate, does not give much depth; so if you are planning any extensive visits to the ruin sites I would pick up a guide covering those sites. For the casual traveler this book will be sufficient. I would Highly recommend this guide to anyone headed to Riviera Maya. The authors love of this place is evident along with the joy he gets from sharing it with others! (And if you are looking for a fun beach read check out my thriller novel "A Tourist In The Yucatan!"

I have to admit I did not fully appreciate this book until we actually got to Riviera Maya. I actually purchased other guide books, like the Eyewitness Travel Guide Top 10, because I love the photos. However this book has a wealth more information and we particularly enjoyed the walking tour of Playa as well as the awesome restaurant/food suggestions. It's apparent the author has spent lots of time there and feels like you are getting "inside" info. I would highly reccommend this book over others.

A useful travel guide for not only planning a trip to Playa del Carmen, but I felt compelled to bring it along with me for last-minute detours. A well organized format and engaging side bars made it a pleasure to read. History and local colloquialisms an added bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guidebook for Playa!   July 7, 2007

This book was really helpful for my first trip to Playa del Carmen - it has many good tips. He is correct that you can land here without a hotel reservation and find a place to stay easily - there are also many different types of lodging available. I wish I had this book months in advance of the trip for the lodging info instead of just before arriving.

I came to Playa to attend a friend's wedding and made the mistake of booking at the Blue Parrot, along with the wedding party. I got stuck at the 5th Ave, which was a bummer - it was in the heart of party central. In my opinion, even if you want to party all night, avoid hotels that are on the main section of 5th Ave or you won't get any sleep. Many of the clubs have bands that play late into early hours of the morning. I was unimpressed by everything about the Blue Parrot Hotels, including the food at the beach cafe. I had friends who stayed at the suites, and they said it was quieter there - those also have refrigerators, and the 5th Ave units do not.

I abandoned my digs after a few days and moved to the Luna Blue Hotel & Garden upon the recommendation of a friend - what a difference! It's off the main walkway and at the quieter end of town (though for how long - who knows - construction is booming here with new hotels going up everywhere). The hotel is owned by a friendly American couple, Tony & Cheri, who do a great job at making you feel at home. The hotel is a tropical paradise with many plants and trees in the courtyard that is central to all units. I stayed in the unit with a full kitchen - what a delight! Moving hotels completely changed my experience in Playa. I also appreciate the guide book information and recommendations for food. Au Cacao has amazing cafe mocha frappe, and Aca Los Tacos is the place to go for tacos al pastor. They are right next door to each other, so don't miss it!

this little book went everywhere with us and was a great aid on our first trip to Playa......beaches, resturants, and shopping were all right on, and the ruins info gave us great heads up for the rest of the guides' info
on the tours.....there is just too much to do, but that is not the books fault.....great vacation!!!
